Those who gave their lives from Yarm ______________________________________

HARRIES, Alec Howell. Pte 56138 19th Btn Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment).

Return to Yarm Roll Call

Alec was born in Carlton in Cleveland on 29 November 1894 to Sidney Howell Harries, an elementary schoolmaster at Carlton and Faceby Schools, aged 36 and Annie Eliza Harries (nee Nelson) aged 33. He had sisters Mary Howell aged 8 and Ella aged 2, brothers Thomas Nelson aged 6 and Harold Pembroke aged 4 plus nephews Leonard and Roland Sutcliffe aged 14 and 13. In 1901 the family was living in Carlton Grange and Alec was joined by sistes Phylis born in 1898 and Joyce Mabyn in 1899. Joyce died in the 1901. By 1911, two additional children had been born, Doreen then aged 7 and Dudley aged 5. Alec is not registered with a profession and therefore could be travelling to Yarm Grammar School.

It is believed that Thomas emigrated to Canada on board the Cassandra sailing out of Glasgow on 30 April 1910 bound for Quebec. Thomas died in Hamilton, Wentworth in Ontario on 18 October 1918. It is possible that Harold similarly emigrated to Canada aboad the Megantic leaving Liverpool on 25 May 1912 also bound for Quebec. Alec similarly could have emigrated as he joined the Canadian Infantry on 7 April 1915 in Toronto and the Batallion sailed on 28 May 1915 via Shorncliffe in England before landing in France on 14 September 1915. The Canadian forces suffered heavy losses and Alec died on 29 October 1915.
He is remembered on the Yarm Grammar School board. There are no other memorials containing his name in the area. He is remembered at BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD and in the Canadian WW1 book of remembrance
